A Symbol of Friendship

The Girl Scout Sign is an important part of Girl Scout meetings and ceremonies, but do you know where it comes from? It all started with the days of chivalry, when armed knights greeted friendly knights by raising their right hand, palm open, as a sign of friendship. We raise our right hand palm open to symbolize friendship, but we raise only three fingers, which represent the three parts of the Girl Scout Promise. This unique sign and pledge unites all Girl Scouts across the globe! So the next time you show the sign think of all the women before you, and all the girls to come who will be a part of the friendship, and learning and fun that is Girl Scouts.

The High Adventure Girl Scouts went backpacking this weekend in Tahoe National Forest! On the trip we learned map and compass skills by navigating our way through the forest. We honed our outdoor cooking skills, by cooking over an open fire. We practiced Leave No Trace by camping on hard rock surfaces and making a game of walking on rocks instead of delicate vegetation.

We chose not to have a campfire where one would have been a strain on natural resources. The snowy hike to the campsite was a surprise in late July, but a pleasant and beautiful experience. We had a great time and came to a deeper appreciation for nature and our environment. Join us next time!

Counselor-in-training

At Girl Scout camp, high school aged girls can sign up to be a counselor-in-training (CIT). As a CIT, you learn about both leadership and working with younger girls. What is it like to be a CIT?

A day in the life of a Girl Scout CIT:

5:30am: The sun rises. Birds and other critters begin their day.

7:00am: The bell rings to wake up the camp.

8:00am: Breakfast. A cool thing about Camp Menzies is that tables at meals are made up of girls from different programs, so you get to meet new people at every meal. Every person at the table has a different job, and CITs have their own special job. Being a CIT comes with extra responsibilities.

After breakfast, CITs usually do CIT work, which ranges from learning about professionalism to how to work with brownies. During this time, CITs make sure to take breaks to play games.

Noon: lunch. Lunch is run similarly to breakfast, but with different food. = )

1pm: Me time. This is time to read, reflect, or quietly play games with the other CITS.

2pm: At this time of day, CITs usually shadow. CITs are assigned different groups, and then spend time with those groups to both help out and learn about working with the girls. CITs get to play games, do arts and crafts, and do other activities with the girls.

4:30pm: After watching younger girls do traditional camp activities, it’s the CITs turn! You might find the CITs at the art castle, float in a canoe on the lake, or trying to pop balloons at archery.

6pm: Dinner!

7:30pm: All camp event. The event varies every evening. On the first and last night of each session, there is a campfire. During their time at camp, the CITs get to be in charge of one campfire. During the rest of the week, the event could be something like a CIT scavenger hunt, where the CITs hide and the rest of the camp tries to find them.

After the evening program is bedtime.

Overall, the CIT program consists of learning, making new friends, and lots and lots of fun!

We canʼt believe itʼs already the end of the school year. Do you have plans for summer yet? If not, weʼve got you covered! Donʼt stay home and be bored - we have lots of options for day and overnight camps. Theyʼre a great way to meet new friends, learn something new and possibly even earn a new badge.

Camp Menzies is our overnight camp in the Sierra Nevada Mountains, with sessions ranging from 4-8 days. Thereʼs something for everyone entering grades 2-12, with themes ranging from outdoor activities and sports to jewelry making and art. You can learn survival skills, explore San Francisco or Tahoe, or help build a cabin. Click here to see all the sessions and register now. Questions about camp? There are also 2 short-term residence camps where Girl Scouts camp at an established site:

Camp Golden Timbers in Tuolumne County (July 25-28)

Or if you want a shorter commitment closer to home, there are many day camps all the way from Marysville to Merced.

Girl Scout Tornado Relief Efforts

We're sure you have been following the headlines regarding tornado-related losses of life and property most recently in Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee, and Mississippi and in many parts of the Midwest. The losses have been catastrophic, the worst tornado season in more than 90 years. While it appears that council offices and camps have survived with limited damage - we know that many Girl Scout families are experiencing devastating loss.

Girl Scouts of North-Central Alabama has significant damage in 31 of their 37 counties. Their council's CEO, Trish Coghlan, reports that countless members of the extended Girl Scout family have suffered significant loss. They will not know the full impact until power and communication lines are restored throughout their jurisdiction.

How to Help Those Affected
Many Girl Scouts around the country want to know how they can help. We encourage those who would like to donate money or collect funds to do so with respected national charities that focus on disaster relief including the Red Cross and the Salvation Army. You can also visit the North-Central Alabama Web site at www.girlscoutsnca.org for more details.

At times like these, Girl Scouts come together in sisterhood to help those in need. We have seen our Movement rally in support of the victims of Hurricane Katrina and other natural disasters over the years, and will continue to do everything we can to help our communities in the weeks and months ahead.

In closing, we want to express our gratitude to the staff and volunteers who continue to serve girls in the affected regions. You are truly living the Promise and Law.

Have you heard of C.S.I.?

It's not what you think it might be...

C.S.I. stands for Cookie Site-sale Investigators.

The C.S.I. crew is made up of Girl Scouts who volunteer to help other sister Girl Scouts with site sales. They will be looking for site sales throughout the council every weekend until March 20. If you have an excellent site sale you will be C.S.I. approved, you'll get a C.S.I. t-shirt and stickers.

You won't know if or when C.S.I. will visit your site sale so make sure you're prepared. Keep your pocket guide with you so you'll be ready to answer questions such as:

1. Why are Caramel deLites sometimes called Samoas?

2. What's the number one selling cookie?

3. What's your goal?

Also, C.S.I. will help girls learn and practice the five skills of the Girl Scout Cookie program, which are:

FUN FACT: Juliette Gordon Low turns 150 years old on October 31st

Juliette Gordon Low was, and still is, an extremely important part of Girl Scouts. Without her, where would Girl Scouts be today? Her vision led to unlimited opportunities for girls nationwide, and we should acknowledge all of the wonderful things she did for us.

Did you know that Juliette Gordon Low came up with the idea of Girl Scouts after meeting the founder of Boy Scouts, Sir Robert Baden-Powell, in England in 1912? Girls were demanding a similar organization for themselves, so immediately after Juliette returned to the United States, she created Girl Scouts with the vision of helping girls become productive and responsible women. Girl Scouts began with just a small gathering of 18 girls and is now an international movement with over 3.7 million girl and adult members. Isn't that incredible!?

Due to her national recognition and success with Girl Scouts, Juliette Gordon Low was inducted into the National Women's Hall of Fame in 1979. In 1983, President Ronald Regan signed a bill naming a new federal building in Savannah in honor of Juliette Gordon Low. it was the second federal building in US history to be named after a woman.

It’s National Courtesy Month, so try to go out of you way to be nice to everyone, and see how it changes the way you feel, not to mention how others will treat you. :)

Hold open a door for a stranger, let someone go ahead of you in line at the grocery store, simply say thank you after someone does something for you. The possibilities are endless!

GS Mystery Case #1912 was opened about a month ago and has finally been solved by three of our brightest reporters. The mystery of the random Girl Scout logo that was found on a brick wall located on 16th street near highway 50 now has a story.

Esme, a former Girl Scout, said that wall was her Girl Scout Gold Award project in November of 1995. She helped a Cadette troop design and plan a mural, and got permission from the mini storage to paint their mural and logo on their brick wall. The one stipulation was that it was only going to be there for one year and then painted over, but the company changed their mind and it has been there almost 15 years!

Get Great Grades This Year

Want to get better grades this year but you are not sure how?
Here are some tips to help make school a little easier, and maybe even (gasp) fun!

Don’t leave your studying for the night before- you won’t remember anything the next day. Not only will you be super tired from saying up all night trying to cram everything in, there’s NO WAY you’ll remember everything.

Make flashcards with vocab, formulas or key ideas you need to know. Quiz yourself if you have a break in class or while you’re waiting for school to start, and it will save you from having to hide a bad test score.

GRAB A FRIEND! This makes studying fun (as long as you don’t wander off your studying too much), and you are able to remember and understand things a lot better when you’re able to discuss it with someone. Or get a whole group together to meet once a week to study and take turns asking each other questions.

Step away from the computer and no one will get hurt. We all know how addicting email, IM, and Facebook can be, but take a break. Don’t try to multitask because we all know how much work actually gets done while you’re chatting with your friends. Get on when you’re taking a break from working, and set a timer for a few minutes so you remember to get back to your homework. When everything is completed, then sign back on.

Water Fun

Bored, but don't know what to do? Try cooling off...

Grab a hose and a sprinkler head, or just jump in the pool and try some of these games with some friends!

Diving contest

Take turns diving to see who can dive the furthest, smoothest, or who has the best diving trick.

Watermelon Rugby

With your parent's permission, grab a watermelon and grease it up with some Vaseline. Form teams and drop the watermelon in the pool, and and whichever team can get the watermelon to the opposing team's side first, wins.

Freeze Tag

Grab a hose and pick one person be "it". If you get splashed by the water, you're frozen until another player tags you.

Jump rope

Take a hose and hold it parallel to the ground, and swing it around like a jump rope. Have your friends try to jump like it were an actual rope, and don't get hit by the water!

Water Slide

If you have a slide in your yard, stick a hose at the top so the water is flowing down the slide, and now you have your very own water slide!

Weave a Shirt

Check out this awesome shirt you can WEAVE!!

Materials:*

Tailor's chalk or something to mark your shirt

scissors

needle and thread or sewing machine

pins

a shirt

*Some of these tools may require adult assistance, so please ask an adult before beginning this project. :)

How to make it:

1. Mark with your chalk about 1 inch all the way around the collar of your shirt, then cut along that line. (you can throw this scrap away or save it for another project)

2. Mark with your chalk about three quarters of an inch from the bottom of your shirt, and continue the line all the way around. Cut it out and SAVE this scrap.

3. Do the same thing again, measuring three quarters of an inch from the bottom of your shirt, and cutting all the way around. SAVE this scrap.

4. Sew the two strips together, either with a sewing machine or with a needle and thread, to make one long strip of fabric.

5. Make marks along one side of your shirt starting at the armpit and moving down, making the lines longer the farther down you go (Make your lines closer together and shorter than mine- thick long lines don't work out too well). Cut along those lines, making sure you cut all the way through both sides of the shirt.

6. Sew one end of the long strip to the inside of the bottom of the shirt to start weaving! Then weave the long strip along the cuts you made, alternating over and under, working your way all the way around the shirt.

7. When you run out of the long strip you're weaving with, sew it to the inside of the shirt, and you're ready to go!!

Saga Shirt

Hey Girl Scouts, I have a brand new design for you, inspired by 99 Ways to Cut, Sew, Trim, and Tie Your T-Shirt into Something Special.

Materials:

Shirt

Scissors*

Sewing machine and/or and needle and thread*

Pins

*Steps involving these tools may need adult assistance. Please check with your parents to make sure it's OK before starting this project. :)

1. Draw a line using tailor’s chalk, a washable marker or plain chalk from the armpit of your shirt to halfway down the sleeve.

2. Repeat on the other sleeve, and cut along the line on both sides, giving you cropped sleeves and tubes of fabric. SAVE THESE SCRAPS

3. Cut around the neckline of your shirt half an inch to an inch all the way around. SAVE THIS STRIP OF FABRIC

4. At this point you should have two tubes from the sleeves and one long thin piece of fabric that you have cut off of your shirt. These will all be important to make your shirt look fabulous!! :)

5. Cut the strip of fabric in half. Fold each of those in half and sew them near the bottom of your shirt. Sew it on straight or add a little design like I did- make it unique!

You can use a machine or sew by hand. I chose to sew by hand to give it a home made look, but either way works just as well.

6. Take a sleeve tube and even out the top using a ruler to make the edges straight. These pieces will be used to make pockets on the bottom of your shirt, so trim the tube to the size you want your pockets to be. The amount of trimming needed depends on the size of the shirt, and your personal preference.

7. Sew the bottom and any trimmed sides together to make a pocket with the top open.

8. Carefully sew the pocket onto the bottom of your shirt UNDER where the strip of fabric is.

9. Do the same for the other sleeve tube and sew under the other strip of fabric on the bottom of your shirt.

10. Cut a small hole in the front of each pocket to pull the strips of fabric through and tie a bow. But make sure it is not too big so your bow will slip through the hole.

11. Clean up any rough edges and your shirt is ready to go!!!

V Neck T-Shirt

To make this awesome shirt just follow these simple steps!

1. Lie your shirt on a flat surface

2. Decide how far away from the collar you want your new neckline, and mark that distance around the edge using a ruler. Connect your marks to make one solid line.

3. Find the middle of your shirt and make a mark where you want the V-neck to come down. Use tailor's chalk or a washable marker

4. Then using sharp scissors*, cut carefully along the line (* if you aren't allowed to use sharp scissors, ask an adult to help you)

5. Trim any rough edges, and you're ready to go!

Are you looking for something fun and different to do this summer?

Do you want to have an impact on Girl Scouts in your council?

If you are entering 10th grade or up, then I have the perfect opportunity for you!

The Marketing and Communications (MarComm) department of GSHCC is now hiring interns for the summer!

As an intern, you would produce our council's fabulous magazine, Hear & Now, which is designed by girls just like you, for girls just like you!

You can work in photography, writing, design, fashion, editing, or interviewing, working with other girls to make Hear & Now just the way you want it.

You can also be on TV!! As an intern you will be trained to be a representative for the council on TV during cookie sales (did you see me on Sacramento & Co.??)

Not only is it a lot of fun, but you get to learn a lot and meet some really great girls from around the council too!

There are 3 sessions, and you can do one, two or all of them:

Session 1: June 14 - July 9, 2010

Session 2: July 12 - August 6, 2010

Session 3: July 26 - August 20, 2010

Make Cool T-shirts

Now, if you're like me, you hate the way some t-shirts look: boring and uninteresting. But I have a solution for you! Starting this month I will be posting a new way to modify a regular t-shirt into something snazzy and original that all your friends will be asking about.

CAMP is Here!!

It's almost that time of the year...when school ends and we have plenty of time to sit and do nothing... and go to Camp Menzies!

This year is going to be a great summer up at camp. It will be full of fun, water fights, s'mores, and lots and lots of songs!

There are loads of different programs focusing on art, the environment, water, the solar system and so much more!! You can also go with your troop, family or with your mom or dad. There are lots of choices, so head on over here to check them out!

And for you older Girl Scouts, don't forget to check out the leadership programs available! Stay at camp longer and have 10 times the fun!!

Leader Appreciation Day is April 22, so make sure you do something nice for your leader!

Sing her (or him) a song, make a gift, or check out these great gift ideas in the Girl Scout Shop:

Tote bag to carry all their GS stuff

Wooden picture frame- put a picture of your troop in it before you give it to them.

A keep sake box- have each member of the troop put an object in the box symbolizing or describing a memory from your time as a troop, and put it in the boxd before giving it to your leader.

Site Sales

Site Sales are upon us, which means standing in front of stores asking people to buy cookies. Sounds boring, right?

WRONG!

Site Sales can be a lot of fun! Not only do you get to hang out with your friends, but you get to sell TONS of cookies and come up with creative ways to approach customers!

Here are some tips to make this year's Site Sales fly!
Hold a box of cookies while you talk to customers, if they can see how good they look... they won't be able to resist.
Only ask them on the way out: not only do they have some change now, but they still have their wallets handy. :)
Make up a song or poem to invite customers to buy your cookies.
Come up with your own! If you have a really great idea, leave a comment and let us know! :)

Thinking Day 2010

World Thinking Day is February 22nd this year, so mark your calendars!

World thinking day was started in 1926 as a day when Girl Scouts and Girl Guides all around the world think of each other and give thanks and appreciation to their “sister” Girl Guides and Girl Scouts.

The World Thinking Day theme for 2010 is girls worldwide say "together we can end extreme poverty and hunger" and the aim is to raise awareness among everyone about the situation and improve the lives of the poorest people in the world.

All of the money raised this year will be going towards getting rid of poverty and hunger in Haiti, Zimbabwe, Sudan, Georgia, and Maldives.

If your Service Unit is having an event, see if you are collecting any money for the World Thinking Day fund, and ask your friends and family to donate.

If you're not having an event, talk to your Service Unit and see if it's possible to have one!

Cookie Season is upon us yet again, and I don't know about you, but I'm more pumped than ever!

Pre-orders run until Monday, January 25th. They will be delivered on February 13th, and Site Sales run through March 14.

Not sure where to start? Need some tips? Don't worry, I've got your back. :)

There are customers waiting for you, all you have to do is ask!
Not sure who to ask? Try:

Your Doctor's/Dentist's office
Teachers
Friends (especially if you're in high school, because trust me, everyone loves Girl Scout Cookies)
Neighbors
Your parents' co-workers
Relatives (give your long lost aunt a call! And what grandparent can resist their granddaughter asking if they'd like to buy some cookies??)

Shy? Need some help asking? Try these:
"Hi my name is ______ (first name only) and I was wondering if you would like to order some Girl Scout Cookies."
"Hi, would you like to buy some Girl Scout Cookies to help support the girls in your community?" "Good morning/afternoon/evening, my name is ________. Would you like to order some delicious Girl Scout Cookies?"
Mix it up and be creative! Practice with your troop and come up with some good ideas! :)

Just remember to always have a buddy and an adult with you when you go door to door.

Set a goal, either for yourself or with your troop. If you reach that goal, set another one!!

Do you have that one person you have absolutely no idea what to get them for the holidays?
Have you tried searching stores, but can't find anything?

Here are some tips that are bound to give you some ideas!

Winterfest! - There are still three sessions open and there are SOOOOOO many different things to buy there!

GS Shop - There are some really cool items for anyone on your list, from moms, dads, aunts, great step-sisters in law, and anyone else on your list.

Make it! - Everyone loves a handmade gift that shows just how much you appreciate them.

"Creative" Coupons - Give a coupon good for one day spent with you, doing what ever they want to do, skating, shopping, going to the gym, or hanging out at home.

Sing a song - personalize a song for your favorite person, or write it if you don't want to sing it. ;)

ALSO, have a secret buddy exchange at your last GS meeting before the holidays. Then have some hot chocolate and candy canes and sit by the fire! :)

Happy 149th Birthday to the founder of Girl Scouts, Juliette Gordon Low!

Juliette was born on October 31st 1860 (yes Halloweeen... kinda spooky, huh??) in Savannah, Georgia.

After traveling the world and spending some time with Robert Baden-Powel, the founder of Boy Scouts (don't boo too much), Juliette decided she wanted to start her own group of scouts for girls in the U.S.

She founded Girl Scouts on March 12th, 1912, with 18 local girls from Savannah. We've sure grown a lot in 97 years!!

So Happy Birthday to Juliette, and Happy Birthday to all of the other Girl Scouts born in October!

Hey Girl Scouts!!!

Girl Scout Cadettes, Seniors and Ambasadors, I have an announcement just for you!!
If you’relooking to add some spice to your life, I have the solution for you - become a Program Aide!!

Get away from school and homework for a weekend, or even a few hours, and help the council run events for younger girls.

You can earn community service hours, earn your PA Pin, be a role model for younger girls, and above all, have fun!

You’ll meet lots of other PAs from around the council, and you can make events fun for younger girls just like PAs did for you when you were a Girl Scout Daisy or Girl Scout Brownie.
If you’re interested, or already a PA, there is a kickoff party Friday, October 16th at 6:30 p.m. at the Main Council Office. 3005 Gold Canal Dr, Rancho Cordova, CA 95670.

What's up Girl Scouts?!

I have a report from the Mitchel Musso concert!!

Jen and I went down to the Crest Theater on September 1st for the concert, and it was SOOOO much fun! We got meet and greet passes and got to meet Mitchel!

We gave him some cookies (Carmel deLites and Peanut Butter Sandwiches) and took some pictures. He signed a box of cookies that we'll be giving away too! (Check back soon for the details)

Then it was time for the concert.

He had two opening acts: Jimmy Robbins, and KSM. Both were really awesome, and I can't wait to buy both of their CD's!

Then it was time for Mitchel, and both Jen and I were SUPER excited!! We took LOTS of pictures..... here are just a few!

Dear Julie,

There's this guy at my school. He's really cute and nice but he also is a flirt and gets in trouble quite often. I don't know what to do. I like him a lot, but my friend asked him to go to the 8th grade dance as friends, but he turned her down. She also texted him awhile back and asked if he liked me. He never replied but seemed to be around me a lot when we had elective. What should I do?

Dear Crushin',

This guy probably gets into trouble quite often because most guys go through a stage where they need attention, positive or negative. Hopefully he will grow out of this stage, and as long as he treats you and others with respect I think it's ok to continue liking him. When he turned down your friend's invitation to the dance, maybe he was waiting for an invitation from you? As to your friend texting him, not many guys are willing to share their emotions about girls, even to their closest friends. I think you should ask this guy out on a group date. See if your friends and his want to go to the park for a game of tag or go for an after dinner ice cream run. Going on group dates will give you the chance to get to know him and see if he is interested without the awkwardness of a one on one date.

Session 6, Last Day

July 11th
Hello Everyone,

Today was a great day up here at Menzies . Night Owls and Camp’s Canoe arrived back from their trip this morning and they had some great stories to share with everyone. They also had a blast doing archery! All the groups had the option of participating in our Polar Bear Swim this morning in the Canoe Lake and some of the campers took that opportunity. They also earned a certificate about doing the Polar Bear Swim. Forest Friends went swimming this afternoon and had a great time planning their skit. For campfire, they decided to dance on Hannah Montana song for everyone. Sierra Safari slept in the meadow last night and woke up in time for many of the girls to do the Polar Bear swim. They also went swimming in the afternoon and to Nature. The girls in Firelight and Fairytales had a great time at Nature where they went bug catching in the meadow. The girls were also able to go canoeing and had a lot of fun looking for tadpoles. Tonight we look forward to an all-camp campfire where all the campers will perform skits with their units for the rest of camp. It should be a lot of fun! It has been a great session and we are sorry to see all the girls return home tomorrow.

Hi everyone,
Today has been a busy day up here at Camp Menzies! The girls arrived excited and full of energy. Everyone was very excited to meet their counselors. In the afternoon, they toured camp with their unit and did the swimming assessment. We had a nice pasta dinner with a salad bar.
They also played name games and running games in our meadow with their counselors. All the units planned their cookouts today and decided what foods they would cook for their unit cookouts. On the Loose arrived from their two days trip and they had an amazing time doing water rafting, all day today. This evening we had a campfire where all the girls were able to watch their counselors perform skits. It was a lot of fun! Tomorrow will be another busy day for everyone. Good Night!

Hello Everyone!
Today has been a really busy day, here at Camp Menzies. Earlier today, the units participated in a variety of different activities. Horse Lovers went horseback riding for an hour and canoeing. The Counselors in Training are leaving tomorrow morning to go up to Lake Alpine for two nights campout. CIT’S spent most of the day working on their program and training. Camp n’ Canoe had a lot of fun canoeing today and then went to Nature and swimming. Horse Lovers will start their horseback riding tomorrow. Today, they did several different camp activities including swimming and canoeing. On the loose program, also are leaving tomorrow morning for a day trip and water rafting. Night Owls had a lot of fun canoeing today and then went to Nature and swimming. Horse Lovers will start their horseback riding tomorrow. Today, they did several different camp activities including swimming and canoeing. Tomorrow evening they are having a sleep out with the CITs in the meadow. In The Spotlight

July 7th
Hello!
Today was another great day up here at camp. All campers made sure to have their water bottles full and they stayed hydrated all day long. This evening we had an All Camp Event, which was a big game of marshmallow paintball. Everyone had a blast playing paintball. Earlier today, the units participated in a variety of different activities. The campers did several different activities during the day with their units and had a blast! On the Loose left this morning for rock climbing and they should be back tonight. Horse Lovers went horseback riding and had a lot of fun. Smores and more went canoeing and swimming, while All That’s’ Art campers had so much fun playing games in the meadow and doing arts and crafts this evening. The CITs have been having a blast shadowing in the different units and hanging out with the younger girls. For dinner everyone cooked out in their units and had campfires. Tonight all units are going to sleep in the meadow. Well, tomorrow is another busy day and we look forward to having fun with the girls.

First Day!

July 6th
Today has been a busy day up here at Camp Menzies! The girls arrived excited and full of energy. The afternoon was spent going through rotations to different activity areas to see what the units would like to do at each area. Everyone did rotations through the different specialty areas where they decided what they wanted to work on during their time here. In the evening everyone went up to Pine haven for our campfire. The girls also got to hear the Story of the three pigs, and also singing a lot of songs. Today, the campers had a chance to do some swimming in the swimming hole, play a lot of meadow songs and many other activities.
Tomorrow is our first busy day filled with activities and fun!

Special Event Spotlight

June 27th
Hello everyone. Today was our first full day at camp! And it was HOT up here in the mountains!! All the counselors made sure all campers had their water bottles with them and that they were drinking plenty of water to stay hydrated and cool. Eco explorers went horseback riding and they loved it. They said their favorite part was learning how to stop and lead the horse. They enjoyed canoeing lots as well especially going backwards. Moreover, they went on a little hike and learned about outdoor safety. Horse Lovers spent some time grooming the horses and learned the very special horse knot. Moreover, the girls enjoyed archery. They cooled off by working on an arts n crafts project in the morning under the shady arts and crafts castle. Summer stock ladies played meadow games in the morning and worked on badge work activities as well. Half of the group went on to see the play “Smokey Joe’s café” in Columbia. The other half stayed at camp and enjoyed canoeing and cooling off at the swimming hole by playing games like charades and singing; tomorrow the girls will be switching off to go and see the play. Mad about mural showed their artistic abilities by working on the camp Menzies kiosk and they also went canoeing. Take aim girls enjoyed canoeing and nature in the afternoon as well as lots of time in the archery range working on their skill to hit the bull’s eye! Backcountry adventure ladies went horseback riding and worked on an arts and crafts project. They also took some time to plan their trip out of camp and learned some packing tips from their counselors. This evening, we had R.O.C time in which all campers go to choose an activity led by counselors in different areas of the camp. Some of the activities were: origami, ultimate Frisbee, friendship bracelets, oriental painting, creative writing and poetry and much more. Mountains to the Sea, Picture This, Yosemite Institute & Beyond are doing amazing on their trips and enjoying every bit of it. Mountains to the Sea got to see lots of dolphins during their whale watching this morning. Picture This and Yosemite Institute & Beyond joined each other for a two night camping near Mono Lake and they will be visiting Bodie State Historic Park tomorrow. Tomorrow is another full day and an all camp cookout is planned! See you tomorrow.

Hello from Camp Menzies!

Today we had really hot weather, here, at Camp Menzies.We woke up at 7 am with the ring bell and many units made their own breakfast. The campers and their counselors made pancakes, fruit salad and hot chocolate. Today we had many activities, here at Camp Menzies. The Camp Superhero did a lot of things. At arts and crafts, the campers made capes and masks for their Superhero characters. Then, the campers took a short hike (too short says Hanna) and they had a picnic lunch. Overall, so far it’s been pretty awesome. Campers from Horsin Around went on a short hike to Menzies’ cabin, and worked on a badge work. They also had a chance to play a lot of games in the meadow and run around. This evening we had lesson of how to make s'mores and some of the campers start packing for the upcoming trips we have tomorrow. Picture this program will visit Yosemite National Park and Mono Lake, where we will spend 5 days, 4 nights.

First Day of Session 2:
June 23th
Hello everyone!

Today has been a busy day up here at Camp Menzies! The girls arrived excited and full of energy. The girls ate lunch with their units in the dining hall and then went to their units to settle in to their cabins or tents. During the afternoon everyone rotated through the different activity periods to talk with the specialists and decide what projects they want to work on while they are up here at camp. After dinner everyone went to Pine Haven, our campfire ring, for our opening campfire. There, each of the units was able to watch their counselors perform skits for them. Tomorrow is our first busy day filled with activities and fun! Many of our units are preparing and packing for the trips we will have in few days. Under Construction continued building the cabin and are very close to finishing! When not building they spent time doing archery and arts n’ crafts. Today was a lot of fun and the kids enjoy watching the skits during the campfire.

Sisters Helping Sisters

Girl Scouts Heart of Central California has launched a new program to help our Girl Scout sisters in need. Sisters Helping Sisters will enable Girl Scouts or Girl Scout troops to provide supplies or other Girl Scout materials to troops or girls with financial need.

If you are a girl or troop who could benefit from this program or would like to participate, email: info@girlscoutshcc.org. Please place “Sisters Helping Sisters” in the subject line and more information will be sent to you.

We have also placed a Giving Tree in the Rancho Cordova and Modesto Girl Scout Shops with requests for supplies.

Girl Scouts has just teamed up with Microsoft to launch LMK (a.k.a. let me know).

Basically, it is a Web site created with help from teens like you and industry experts, you'll get the know-how to navigate safely through your online life and even help your parents understand it too.

You get on, create a profile, and can even earn a digital Girl Scout patch. If you want to, you can "wear" the patch on your favorite Web site.
